Day 53 - Rehabilitation

I honestly still can't believe it's July. I mean it's even almost the 3rd. The days are absolutely flying by. One minute you wake up at 7:30am and the next thing you know it's 3pm or later. For example, right now it's 11:37pm. Still can't believe it!

Ever since we got the new babies the two interns in back decide who gets what animal. I was told I was doing raccoons without much say so I guess that's what I did. No big deal, I do not mind coons whatsoever but I guess it would be nice if I actually could feel like I had a say. I let this one slide but considering the fact I honestly woke up in an irritated and rather stand offish mood I wasn't having it the rest of the day. No matter, I fed raccoons (inside and outside) and filled charts. In between all this I had to help education with some things since they were short staffed today and super super busy. Such things include answering phone or watching front desk. Had to take an intern to the hospital as well, whom I ended up picking up and moving to a different place during lunch later, and not sure what else. I also had to help a staff member with weighing and checking out our new resident Snowy Owl. Due to helping out I got the chance to hold on to her for the staff member which ended up in her taking a picture of me with the Snowy!

My boyfriend pointed out how lucky I was to get this chance and let me tell you, he's right! I cannot express how happy I am to have this chance and I absolutely adore this owl as much as I adore Errol....okay and our other birds....lets face it I love them all. My face expresses how happy I am! This is one of my favorite pictures so far. I can see the weight I lost too which makes me happy as well. I am about halfway to going down another shirt size. Just gotta keep at it!

Overall the day was super busy. I was attacking all that I could on the list given to us no matter which person was which. The other intern worked just as hard so we were annihilating the full page of stuff to do like none other.

Such tasks for me included anything I saw besides what was on the list. Sweeping, mopping, and disinfecting the Raccoon Room, feeding raccoons when necessary, changing their bedding, and then making more food when necessary. I was able to work on protocols some today and finished the sparrow category for the bird protocol (too many sparrows out there!!!). I changed all virkon baths which is what we put our feet into in order to disinfect our shoes. This is very important when going from rehab side to education side and when your feet touch anything raccoon related due to possible diseases that could transmit. We have to order at least two to three more baths for the mammal cages outside and for one to be put in the cage room where the other exit is to out back.

I cannot remember the order of everything I did which is why it seems so randomized. Continuing on, I collected two AC covers and washed them up before hanging them up to dry. Once they were dried, at the very end of the day, they were folded and stored up above the Raccoon Room. There's a ledge up above that requires a ladder to reach since it's so high (even for me!) At some point when helping education out I took some random picture of Woody the Wood Turtle eating a peach. It's even more exciting watching him eat a cockroach because he prefers the goopy insides more then anything. I'll get a picture of Woody and said cockroach at some point :)

Other tasks included moving both trucks to the back parking lot in order to make room for visitors in our front parking lot. A ton of people were coming in today due to it being the 4th of July weekend! This means I need to get my game face on tomorrow and dish out the most amazing tours I can give from here on out. I also have a program tomorrow with another intern but we will talk about that more when we get there.

I ended up giving up a half hour of my hour lunch because of protocols and education needing me. Too much going on today so I gave up on taking the break. The center needed me more then I needed the lunch. I am not so much submitting my will but acknowledging my priorities. I love this place too much and besides it's not like protocols required much but sitting in front of a computer. I chatted with staff for a good while too which gave me a break as well when I wasn't feeding and what not.

Also cleaned not only dishes in various places but disinfected counters/surfaces and cleaned out a few carriers to get them out of the way. They ended up back outside for later usage. The other intern and I did a lot of cleaning and just straightening things up while volunteers helped feed and other tasks. Cannot ever thank them enough for all their help!!!!

I do recall that at 4pm everyone was fed, everything was cleaned, and I knocked out a few more list items before calling the day good. Of course this then meant trip to Antigo! A robin came in today and needed transport. I enjoyed talking to the interns there as well. They were all very welcoming this time and we chatted a bit about birds. I accidentally ruined a prank they were pulling on another intern (the put a worm on his shoulder) and overall not only did I feel like one of them for a brief moment but also felt like they were very similar to all of us back at the center. Could not help but smile when I left due to the resemblance between us and them.

As soon as I returned back from Antigo I was going to start raccoon feeding but a staff member was already about to do it so I helped her out and thanked her multiple times for helping me! I made more eggs before heading upstairs and later fed the baby squirrels at 10pm. The other rehab intern, also my roommate, said she would take the 3am feeding if I took the 10pm one. Deal. I struggle way too much and it's still killing me that it does!!! I'm just a hardcore heavy sleeper I guess. Still feel bad.

I wish my post was a little more organized but so much happened that it's hard to remember what order it occurred and it's honestly late as well. Tired and ready for bed!!
