Day 9 - Rehabilitation

Today is Sunday Funday as we like to call it around here :)!

Rough start this morning, running on only 5 - 5.5 hours of sleep but took an "energy shot" or Advocare's Slam to get me going. Working just fine but legs/feet sore. May need to invest in either new shoes or those gel soles where you test your feet on the machine and it gives your proper measurement based on balance....yeah those things.

This morning we fed animals, cleaned some cages, and then went to Trigs to get coffee. It's two stamp sunday per person and a good treat as well. I got a wildberry blizzard which was actually pretty good; though I think I will try strawberry smoothie next time or maybe actual coffee depending on the mood. After this we returned back to shop and chilled a little bit we then picked up some egg books to identify the mystery egg we brought in yesterday. Due to its coloration and such we think Canada Goose.

This mystery egg ID actually then led to a game of hacky sack lol. Today is pretty laxed because of how tired everyone is and because the center is closed but we do plan on cranking out stuff this afternoon. I actually picked some bunny greens and foraged for pine cones while the other intern and staff member on duty today fixed a bracket on the battery in one of the two trucks. I took a squirrel den box that was once outside, but cleaned yesterday, and put it into the nursery on a shelf for future use in there.

We then decided to take lunch so we had the rest of the day to crank out work. So although it is laxed, we are still managing to get our daily tasks finished and get some of the extra stuff done as well.

After lunch, we chilled out for a good ten minutes waiting on a staff member to return and because both of us interns truly have been worn out all day. Once the staff member returned we grabbed a shovel, pitch fork, wheel barrel, trash bags, and gloves and went out to the Raccoon cages where we gathered any dry wood chips that we could, shoveled/picked up all feces and wet spots in the cages, and then replaced said spots with wood chips. Overall the goal was to try to clean the place up at least a little. The raccoons should be gone once they are vaccinated which means a through job will then occur then picking up here/there. We then took the trash to the dumpster and once everything was disinfected and re-stored we asked for our next task.

This included all the outside bird residents; we gathered four 5 gallon buckets and filled them with cold water. We then changed all the water dishes in every outdoor bird cage and returned inside. I was able to fill our long-eared owl, saw-whet, eastern screech, and our two great-horned owls. After all birds were watered we returned inside once more. We helped answer a few questions for the advanced application (regarding whether a certain bird was a passerine or non-passerine) and then began to prepare food dishes/trays for feeding. At the end of the day we wiped out all feeding, watering, and cleaning the rehab side of the building in roughly 15-20 minutes then returned upstairs to rest.

Tonight there is talk about going out to get ice cream but no one is for sure about what exactly is going on. In other news, I found a tick on me today that was taken, killed, and will be shipped away for research. Hopefully nothing is wrong with said tick but even if there was it did not bite me anyway. However, this is the second tick now, so I hope I do not have any hidden ones anywhere.

ALSO, I now have a roommate. One of the other summer interns has arrived and things are going good so far. Lets hope they stay this way.
