Today I was back on the rehabilitation side of things. I first started out in the morning feeding the mice and preparing food for squirrels and the rabbits. Once they were fed and cleaned we then measured the weight of the smallest rabbit (it was 77g) so we could see about releasing. They need to be at least around 100g. The others are but they are as strong as their weakest link so the small one needs work. They will be moved to a bigger tank soon.
After feeding/cleaning I went out and picked bunny greens (dandelions and red clover) to feed them out in the fawn yard. When I was finished up and went back inside I was called over because the staff was getting together for a group picture. A girl scout troop was in and visiting the center for a program; the two spring interns were giving the Birds of Prey program that I will be giving myself one day.
Once the picture was tank it was back indoors and to the daily list a staff member had generated. I organized the back room's donation area and went through the gloves we had; throwing any holy or very old/bad ones out because we were donated new leather gloves (YAY!!!). Once that was complete I then went around and started to restock stuff; mainly blankets, sheets, and towels. I believe we then took lunch and after that, while waiting for the staff member to return, I continued to stock other things like hand soap, trash bags, ver-con (disinfectant), and whatever else seemed to need restocked.
When the staff member finally returned I was up front because both educational interns were out giving tours and I had to watch the front desk. During this time I called a volunteer to request her address since there was a letter on our desk stating we needed to do so at some point. I was going to make call backs but eventually one of the interns returned and I enjoyed the nice easy break; feet ache and tired legs.
Since one of the interns returned I went back to the rehab side of things where I began to help prepare Raccoon food for feeding time. The staff member fed the red squirrels (formula) during this time and I am not sure what else. Once I was done it was on to preparing food for squirrels and bunnies. I fed the bunnies while everyone else actually fed the squirrels. I also cleaned the bunnies cage during this time. One of the other interns went out to feed the racoons too while I went through and did charts (kept as records to make sure tasks were finished and to refer back to). After all this the day was practically over so we took out trash, did dishes, swept/mopped and checked off anything finished off the list. I am not 100% sure if I forgot anything regarding the day but once it was over us three interns practically sat in the front lobby for a good hour because we were too tired to walk upstairs lol.
We then received a call of course which resulted in the three of us loading into a truck with a container and a towel. We drove out of Minocqua to a residents house who claimed she heard a commotion before noticing an egg was laid on her dock. We picked up said egg, evaluated it, and tried to ID it without luck. It was not going to make it at all because of a very translucent appearance to it and because it had a very soft spot on one side. It appeared to be indented as though it took impact. We brought it back to shop any to possibly ID and had the lady fill out a report before so. Once we returned we set the egg down and climbed upstairs to rest.
Later that evening was fun! A new intern arrived and so we all kind of got to know each other more before we went out and got pie at Perkins. Once we ate pie we went to one of the rehab staff's house and had a bonfire. We were going to do smores but forgot pick up food. It was fine though because we had fun talking, watching the fire, and listening to the boats and loons on the lake. Lake front view, got to love it. This happened until it started raining then we moved inside and simply chatted through out the night till we went back to the center around 12am roughly. I ended up staying up and extra hour to work on blog stuff and to see if maybe the phone would ring. This is because I am on phone duty for the first official night which includes sleeping with said phone by head.
PS. No one called alllllll night which made me happy :)
